Amanda Hocking Made Millions By Selling 99-Cent Books — And You Can, Too

Amanda Hocking’s self-publishing story begins in 2010.

At the time, Hocking was stewing in her tiny, sparsely furnished apartment in Austin, Minnesota. She was penniless and frustrated, having spent years fruitlessly trying to interest traditional publishers in her work. She was also, as it happens, a huge Muppets fan, and she’d heard that an exhibition about Jim Henson — the creator of the Muppets — was coming to Chicago later that year. She wanted badly to attend, but she couldn’t afford the trip.
