So you wrote a novel — now what?

The difference between being published by a big name like HarperCollins and self publishing is huge. With the publishing houses, you have to find a way to get noticed and signed on. For a writer, that’s bigger than a lottery win. Then, it might take a few years for the book to hit the shelves, with no payments yet in sight. When you do start making money, the royalties paid to unproven authors are roughly 10 to 20 per cent of the cover price. Yes, they take a big cut, but they do all the editing, marketing, distribution, etc.

Self-publishing a novel means you do everything. First, you have to come up with that stellar manuscript that people will want to pay for and use their valuable leisure time to read. Then you switch hats. If all goes well, a self-published author pulls in roughly 60 to 70 per cent on a book.
